Objectives and Functions
The Fisheries Service under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania (hereinafter – the Fisheries Service) is a budgetary institution owned by the State. The owner’s rights and duties (except for decisions regarding the reorganisation or liquidation of the Fisheries Service) are exercised by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Lithuania. The Fisheries Service is a public legal entity with its own bank account and official seal bearing the coat of arms of the Republic of Lithuania and its name.
OBJECTIVES OF THE FISHERIES SERVICE
The Fisheries Service pursues the following objectives: to implement Lithuania’s fisheries policy and the European Union’s Common Fisheries Policy (hereinafter – CFP); to ensure the lawful and orderly use of fish resources in marine waters; to conduct research on, protect, enhance and restore fish and crayfish stocks in state water bodies; to preserve the gene pool of valuable fish species and breeds of cultivated fish; to develop and coordinate fish breeding programmes; and to implement science policy in the field of fisheries.
FUNCTIONS OF THE FISHERIES SERVICE
The Fisheries Service performs the functions assigned to it by laws and other legal acts relating to the implementation of Lithuania’s fisheries policy based on the principles of the European Union’s Common Fisheries Policy, the conservation and restoration of fish resources, the organisation and enforcement of fisheries control in marine waters, and the organisation of applied fisheries research.
The main functions of the Fisheries Service are:
- to implement Lithuania’s fisheries policy and the European Union’s Common Fisheries Policy;
- to restore and enhance fish stocks in fisheries water bodies;
- to implement science and training policy in the field of fisheries;
- to carry out fisheries control in marine waters;
- to participate in the development and implementation of the fisheries development strategy of the Republic of Lithuania.
