ATVIA–LITHUANIA COOPERATION IN IMPLEMENTING INTERREG VI-A PROGRAMME PROJECT No. LL-00133

The Fisheries Service, hereinafter referred to as FSLT, in cooperation with the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment BIOR of Latvia, began implementing the INTERREG programme project “Latvia–Lithuania Cooperation in Improving Baltic Salmon and Pike-Perch Rearing Methods for More Sustainable, Resilient and Healthier Fish Populations” (SPPwelfare) on 1 March 2024.

The project is implemented under the INTERREG VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Cooperation Programme.

The aim of this project is to promote sustainable social and economic development in the regions covered by the Programme by helping to make them more competitive and more attractive for living, business and tourism.

The planning and implementation of project activities cover three work packages, hereinafter referred to as WP:

WP1 – Improving salmon welfare based on a new environmentally friendly method for fish disease control;

WP2 – Improving the quantity and quality of farmed pike-perch juveniles intended for aquaculture and stock restoration;

WP3 – Development of biosecurity guidelines and a fish health index model, hereinafter referred to as FHIM.

As a result of the project, joint biosecurity guidelines will be prepared. These guidelines will aim to prevent the introduction and spread of pathogens in Latvian and Lithuanian aquaculture facilities, ensure the health status of farmed fish, support water quality monitoring and management, and establish hygiene rules. These measures will contribute to the welfare of farmed fish, help maintain healthy ecosystems and protect wild fish populations.

The project implementation period is from March 2024 to February 2026.

During the implementation of the project, important information will be exchanged through meetings, seminars and conferences. A wide range of stakeholders will be informed, including aquaculture specialists and researchers from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Estonia, representatives of ministries and other institutions, fish farmers and other interested parties.

This project is funded by the European Union.

The total value of the project is EUR 497,146.00.

The total project funding from the European Regional Development Fund, hereinafter referred to as the ERDF, is EUR 397,716.80.

The total value of the FSLT project budget is EUR 204,146.00.

ERDF funding amounts to 80%, or EUR 163,316.80, while national co-financing amounts to 20%, or EUR 40,829.20.
